Rainbow PUSH opens first conference since Rev. Jesse Jackson's death

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Rainbow PUSH Coalition opened its annual conference Wednesday, marking the organization's first gathering since the death of its founder, the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The event began with a spotlight on young people, aligning with this year's theme of empowering the next generation to help fulfill what organizers described as the American promise.

Voices from youth performers filled the convention hall as attendees participated in sessions centered on civic engagement, entrepreneurship and social justice. Among those taking part was Jarrell David, who will soon begin his freshman year at Morehouse College.

"Young people aren't looking to be leaders of tomorrow, young people are looking to be leaders of today and right now," David said.

The conference comes at a time of political division and economic uncertainty. It is also the first held without Jackson, whose decades of civil rights leadership shaped the organization. His son, Yusef Jackson, is hosting the event at Rainbow Push headquarters and offering it free to the public.

"My father often reminded us that with faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move mountains," Yusef Jackson said. "The challenges before us are significant, but so is our collective capacity to meet them."

Organizers said dedicating the opening day to youth reflects their commitment to continuing the mission of expanding opportunity and advancing equality.

"I hope they leave with the understanding that freedom ain't free," Jackson said. "And these rights and these opportunities they have come at a cost. And now they have a responsibility to create the society they want our children to follow them."

The conference will feature several panels and keynote speakers, including former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and the Rev. Al Sharpton. It concludes Saturday.
