Girl escapes from registered sex offender in kidnapping, Rockford police say

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WLS) -- A registered sex offender was taken into custody after allegedly kidnapping a 12-year-old girl, Rockford police said.

On Tuesday a 12-year-old girl was walking near Kishwaukee Street and Lorden court when a man grabbed her and forced her into his car.

The suspect was later identified as Gary Brown, 64.

A witness told police the girl escaped from the vehicle near 10th Street.

Brown was arrested that same day. He is listed a registered sex offender in Illinois and was on parole.

He was charged with aggravated kidnapping and failure to register.

Police did not release further information about the victim's condition.
