CHICAGO (WLS) -- Sarah Silverman plays Laney, a suburban mom who has the perfect life- or at least it looks like it- in the movie "I Smile Back."
Laney's life looks good on the outside, but on the inside, she's falling apart. She's coping with her pain in some dangerous ways. Depression is a storyline with which Silverman is familiar; she's spoken openly about her own battles.
"I was a good resource for this role to a degree, I have my own relationship with depression. There are a lot of the same bones that I was able to draw on. And I've been on all sides of depression; I have it in my family and with other people in the comedy community. Addiction isn't something I've battled but I'm surrounded by it as a comedian," Silverman said.
There wasn't a lot of humor on the sets, Silverman said.
"I convinced myself that in between shots we were gonna have a lot of laughs... and I'm so glad I didn't know that was not the case because I would have tried to weasel out of it entirely. I'm so glad I did it. It was a great experience for me a real eye opening experience for me," Silverman said.
