Classes continue at north suburban high school after stabbing incident

ZION, Ill. (WLS) -- A north suburban high school student is in custody after she allegedly stabbed and critically injured another girl on campus on Friday morning, police said.

Zion police said one of its school resource officers responded to a stabbing incident at Zion-Benton Township High School D126.

The victim, a 17-year-old girl, was taken to a hospital in Libertyville with critical injuries, police said.

The suspect, another 17-year-old girl, fled the campus, but officers took her into custody.

The stabbing prompted a large police response, and the school, located in the 3900-block of West 21st Street, was placed on a "Code Yellow" soft lockdown.

What led up to the stabbing was not immediately clear.

School officials said there is no immediate threat to students or staff.

Classes seemed to go on as normal after the incident, and dismissal proceeded as normal, as well.
