Pregnant woman killed in crash, baby born at hospital

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- First responders worked feverishly early Wednesday morning to save a pregnant woman's baby after she died in a tragic car accident in San Jose.

Dulce Capetillo was eight months pregnant. The Bay Area News Group reports doctors were able to deliver her baby boy. As of Thursday afternoon, that infant was in critical condition.

It's not clear what caused the crash just before 2 a.m. on Highway 101 near the Tully Road exit.

Capetillo's brother, the driver, lost control of the car and hit a parked BMW on the shoulder. The driver of the BMW was arrested on suspicion of being drunk.

Capetillo could not contain her excitement about becoming a mom. On Facebook, she proudly states she's a mommy to be. Only that dream will never come true, and her baby boy is fighting for his life.

Capetillo's brother picked her up from a Morgan Hill Taco Bell where she worked.

The 18-year-old graduate of Independence High School was alert at the scene. Emergency responders rushed her to Valley Medical Center where she later died.

Capetillo's brother was treated for internal injuries; the driver of the parked car suffered minor injuries and was booked for suspected DUI.

The Mercury News reports Capetillo's fiance was in shock over the combined birth of his firstborn and loss of his future wife.

Now, the family is privately grieving for Capetillo and praying for her baby's survival.
