Trey Burke's buzzer-beater helps Jazz weather Carmelo Anthony, Knicks

NEW YORK -- Trey Burke was so deep in the corner, so well defended, that Carmelo Anthony was sure the game would continue.

"There's no way that's going in," he thought. "Let's just get the rebound and go to overtime."

But Burke has done this before, and he knew better.

"It looked good as soon as it left my hand," he said.

Burke made a jumper from the corner as time expired, giving the Utah Jazz a 102-100 victory Friday night over the New York Knicks, who got an NBA season-high 46 points from Anthony.

Anthony's 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left tied it at 100 and put the Knicks in triple digits for the first time this season. But Burke caught the ball near the Jazz bench, faded back to get his shot over the hand of J.R. Smith, and nailed the jumper before stepping back over the sideline into hugs from his teammates.

The Knicks lost their seventh straight game.

Gordon Hayward scored a season-high 33 points for the Jazz, and Derrick Favors added 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Hayward hit a jumper at the buzzer to beat Cleveland last week, but this time the Jazz went to Burke, the former college player of the year who made a deep 3-pointer to force overtime in a victory over Kansas during Michigan's run to the national title game in 2013.

He also made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in a victory over Orlando last season.

"Trey is the guy that's been known for hitting big shots," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "I think he's one of those guys that gets excited when he gets the ball, and Gordon's been like that, too."

Pablo Prigioni scored 13 points for the Knicks, who lost Iman Shumpert to a bruised right hip in the opening minute of the game, landing him on an injured list that already included Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani.

But they almost won anyway because of a brilliant performance from Anthony, who had 17 points in the final period. He could only smile in disbelief at the end, knowing Burke's shot would stand even before the replay review was concluded.

"I just couldn't believe it," Anthony said. "I had to smile that one off."

Burke finished with 13 points and eight assists for the Jazz, who stopped a six-game skid against the Knicks.

Utah was outscored 9-1 to open the fourth and fell behind 81-76, before a three-point play by Hayward started an 11-0 burst by the Jazz that Favors capped with a dunk for an 87-81 advantage. But Anthony kept muscling his way to the basket or drawing fouls to keep the Knicks close enough until his deep jumper over Favors knotted it up.

Shumpert was hurt when Jazz center Enes Kanter banged into him on a drive to the basket. WithAmar'e Stoudemiresitting out to rest, it left the NBA's No. 29 team in points per game without its Nos. 2 and3 scorers. Shumpert was averaging 13.8 points and Stoudemire 10.9.

Jazz: Rookie Rodney Hood tested out his right foot at the morning shootaround before being ruled out for a fourth straight game because of plantar fasciitis. ... Snyder said Toure Murry, a former Knicks guard who was assigned to Idaho of the NBA Development League on Thursday, needed the opportunity to get more work. He hasn't appeared in a game this season for the Jazz.

Knicks: Coach Derek Fisher said the decision to rest Stoudemire was in part because of a quick turnaround, with the Knicks playing again Sunday afternoon. It was the first game Stoudemire missed this season, and Fisher said it was part of a plan the team hopes will have Stoudemire available for 70 or more games. ... Prigioni had season highs in points and steals (four).

ALL ABOUT ANTHONY

Anthony was 16-for-26 from the field and 13-for-16 from the line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. He reached the 40-point mark for the 35th time in his career and the 16th since coming to the Knicks in 2011.
