Illinois Answers Project data shows 'green alleys' help prevent flooding

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Across the Chicago area, neighbors are helping one another recover after this week's severe storms.

The National Weather Service confirmed at least five tornadoes hit the south and west suburbs on Monday.

In many neighborhoods, flooding and debris remain an issue, as crews work to clear fallen trees.

Data from the Illinois Answers Project shows Chicagoans made more than one thousand calls to 311 to report flooding, during and after the storms.

Many of those complaints came from places where there are fewer trees.

Research shows "green alleys" are an effective solution to help mitigate flooding.

However, data shows those projects are heavily concentrated in areas that are less prone to flooding.
