Deandre Thompson allegedly shot Harrington, 38, as he was driving in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Harrington was stopped at a red light at Augusta and Hamlin, police said, when Thompson allegedly opened fire. Officials said Harrington leaned over his 16-year-old daughter to shield her from the bullets. He was hit in the upper back and lower left arm, and is paralyzed from the waist down, Asst. State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said.
His daughter was not injured, but Scaduto said police found a bullet lodged into the head rest where she was sitting.
Scaduto said witnesses identified Thompson and surveillance video from a nearby store caught the shooting.
Thompson is being held without bail.
Harrington is assistant boys basketball coach at Marshall Metro High School, where he's an assistant boys basketball coach. He played for Marshall and was on the squad featured in the award-winning 1994 documentary "Hoop Dreams."
Eleven years ago, his mother was shot to death during a home invasion at a neighbor's house.
