CHICAGO (WLS) -- Ten children were transported from Oscar DePriest Elementary School after pepper spray was discharged in a hallway, the Chicago Fire Department tweeted Wednesday afternoon. The children, who are around the age of 12, are all expected to be OK.

Oscar DePriest Elementary School, located in the 100 block of South Parkside, is in the South Austin neighborhood on the city's Southwest Side.

School officials said a boy and girl got into a fight around 2 p.m. The girl sprayed the pepper spray and children in the area got sick.

"We smelled it and everybody just instantly dropped. And we just started coughing. And some people started throwing up. And one girl, she couldn't breathe, so they had to take her to the hospital. And it was just crazy," Arianna Shaw, student, said.

"I know they have metal detectors, but it seems like they're going to have to start patting the kids down to make sure or looking in book bags or something. Make sure this doesn't happen anymore," Charles Shaw, parent, said.

Police said they are talking to the girl, who, according to the CPS code of conduct, was not allowed to have pepper spray at school. CPS has not replied to a request for comment.
