CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 22-year-old man was shot while driving on Lake Shore Drive overnight.

Residents of Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood called 911 after hearing several gunshots fired in the 1100-block of North Lake Shore.

Police said the motorist was heading north on the drive just before 12:20 a.m. Friday when a black SUV pulled up alongside him. Someone opened fire from inside the vehicle.

The victim was able to drive himself to a BP gas station on North Avenue. He asked an attendant for directions to the nearest hospital. He wound up at the emergency room at Lurie Children's Hospital. An ambulance took him next door, to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in good condition.

"He didn't say where he was shot at. He was kind of nervous and everything. Only thing you see over here is fights. No shooting around here," the gas station attendant said.

But people who live in the neighborhood, which is filled with luxury hotels and condos, were not surprised by the news.

"I don't think any of us are insulated from violence. I think it occurs anywhere. It's certainly terrifying. But it's terrifying wherever it happens in Chicago. I mean this is our city. This is where we live," said Karen Spivery, who lives in the area.

Officers temporarily shut down northbound Lake Shore Drive overnight to look for evidence. They found three shell casings in the far left lane, just past the s-curve near Oak Street Beach.

Police said the victim is a documented gang member. Investigators did not give a description of the suspect. No one is in custody.
