CHICAGO (WLS) -- A teenager shot and killed in Chicago's Old Town community was a member of Secretary of State Jesse White's tumbling team.

Police say Devonshay Lofton was shot while walking Thursday night near the 1300-hundred block of Cleveland.

Secretary White describes the 16-year-old as highly respected and well-mannered. Lofton was reportedly with the team for six years, but left it this summer.

Lofton was shot several times in the back around 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the parking lot of the Evergreen Terrace Apartments in the 1300-block of North Cleveland Avenue. Police said the shooter was on a bike.

"I just heard gunshots - six or seven shots. It's startling, you know? It scared us," William Dunkin said.

Lofton, of the 1300-block of North Hudson Avenue - about a block from the scene of the shooting, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

"It's sickening. It's hurtful. I can't describe the pain I feel right now," said Frank Gill of Young Life Ministries.

A police officer accidentally shot himself in the foot while rushing to the scene. His gun discharged as he was getting out of his vehicle. The officer went to Northwestern Memorial in good condition.

Police are investigating the shooting. They do not have anyone in custody.
