CHICAGO (WLS) -- Joseph Fults, 46, faces misdemeanor battery charges after police said he got into a physical altercation with his girlfriend that ended with her 8-month-old being run over by an SUV.

Police said Fults got into an argument with his 23-year-old girlfriend inside a vehicle in the 7500-block of South Cottage Grove Avenue just before 2:45 a.m. Monday.

The domestic dispute turned violent when Fults allegedly punched the woman's 7-year-old son, who tried to intervene.

Chicago police initially said Fults threw the woman's baby from the SUV. But they later clarified that Fults handed the child to his girlfriend, and the baby dropped to the ground before Fults accelerated. The children were taken to Comer Children's Hospital with bruises. They are both in stable condition.

Police took Fults, of the 7400-block of South Phillips Avenue in Chicago, into custody early Monday morning. He is charged with one count of misdemeanor battery and one count of misdemeanor domestic battery.

Fults is due in court on Tuesday.
