Miriam Enriquez, 61, is recovering after being struck in the neck by gunfire in her McKinley Park home.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police have announced charges in the shooting of a 61-year-old woman on the city's South Side.

The woman was shot in the neck as she sat inside a home in the 3600-block of South Honore.

Police say they arrested Manuel Martinez after he tried to drive away from the scene.

He's now charged with aggravated battery and fleeing.

Miriam Enriquez, 61, is recovering; she was not the intended target, police said.

Her sister, who lives across the street, says Enriquez was sitting on a couch watching TV when the bullets went through the first-floor window of the home.

"My brother-in-law was putting the car in the garage and heard the shots. He went running the house to see. When he got into the house she was laying down on the floor," said Catalina Gonzalez, Enriquez's sister.

Several neighbors heard the shots and immediately came outside to see what was happening. Among them were Rosario Martinez and her daughter.

"She saw a car going real fast, and I told her right away, call the cops," Martinez said.

Police were able to chase the fleeing car and caught up with it after it crashed on I-55. The driver was taken into custody.

Police say they believe the shooting was gang-related and that it may have been sparked by an earlier argument between the gunman and a man inside the residence.

"You really don't want to have this experience at all, because my mom was scared, everybody was scared," said Abundio Perez, a neighbor.

Enriquez is in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.
