CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police are looking for a man who tried to abduct a 15-year-old girl on the city's South Side.

The girl was walking near South Michigan Avenue and 109th Street around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man in a black sedan tried to engage her in conversation and then tried to pull her into his car. The girl ran away and called for help. The suspect drove away.

"I heard a young lady screaming for help. My mom called me. She already had her head out the window, so I put the head out the window and yelled for him to let her go and leave her alone," Darrell Bender said. He ran outside to help and saw the black Grand Marquis drive away.

"He was heavyset, bald with a long beard and braids on his head," Bender said.

Bender said that as businesses have moved out in recent years, crime has moved in.

Jameka Dunmars, who lives in the Roseland neighborhood, said parks in the area attract children and teenagers to the area.

"It's a lot of kids. There's a school right here. There's a lot of kids, especially around 3, 4 o'clock," Dunmars said.

Ronald Ross, who has a 7-year-old daughter, said he always keeps an eye on his daughter.

"You never know what's going to happen. I make sure I see her walk in. I make sure I pick her up. You just never know," Ross said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 911.
