Teen charged in sex assault of CSU student appears in bond court
A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a pregnant student in the city's Roseland neighborhood.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A suspect in the brutal sexual assault of a pregnant college student in a Chicago alley appeared in court Sunday. Aaron Parks, 17, was awaiting sentencing and on home confinement for another crime when he allegedly sexually assaulted the 24-year-old student.

There is no bail for the accused teen and while the judge's ruling is being applauded by some, there are still questions many are asking as to why he was not in custody in the first place.

Friends of the victim were upset to hear the suspect was on home monitoring for an unrelated crime when he allegedly committed the attack.

"That electronic monitoring, to me, failed completely, because if he were away from the establishment where he's supposed to have been at, that should have gone off right away," said community activist Andrew Holmes.

The teen has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated armed kidnapping, and armed robbery after police arrested him in connection with the attack of a Chicago State University student last week.

In court a judge denied bond for Parks after confirming that he was already on electronic monitoring for a charge of aggravated kidnapping and vehicular invasion stemming from a July incident where he tried to assault a woman at gunpoint.

Parks was found guilty in April in a case of attempted armed robbery and is awaiting sentencing for that crime.

"Because he got away with it two months ago and here we are two months later and he succeeded, and thank you Jesus that he didn't killer her," said Dawn Valenti, friend of the victim.

The attack happened Wednesday afternoon near 98th and Indiana.

The suspect forced the victim at knife-point into her car and made her drive into an alley. That's where prosecutors say he sexually assaulted the criminal justice student, robbed her and then locked her in the trunk.

Authorities took Parks into custody Saturday near 72nd and Laflin.

"He was a long way from home, it should have went off, it should have set off a red flag, it needs to be overhauled," said Holmes.

The victim's father said that she is out of the hospital, at home still trying to recover from the ordeal.

Authorities said the suspect could be back in court as early as Monday.

The Chicago State University staff was thanked by the Chicago Police for helping to canvass the area for witnesses and getting possible video surveillance footage.
