ELGIN, Ill. (WLS) -- Andrew Quezada, 24, was charged after police said he sped away from a traffic stop and crashed into another vehicle and a ComEd utility pole in west suburban Elgin.

An Elgin officer pulled out onto Randall Road near Bowes Road around 1:45 p.m. Sunday when his radar indicated a Dodge Durango was traveling 64 mph in a 50 mph zone, southbound on Randall Road.

Police said when the officer turned on his lights and siren in an attempt to pull the driver over, the SUV sped up. The officer lost sight of the vehicle north of Hopps Road.

The officer saw flashes of light coming from ComEd power lines along Hopps Road just east of Randall Road, and the SUV traveling in the opposite direction shortly afterward. The driver passed the police vehicle and tried to turn north onto Umdenstock Road from Hopps Road, but crashed into a garage, causing minor damage.

Police said Quezada tried to run away from the crash, but was taken into custody minutes after the crash.

Further investigation showed the driver had also struck another vehicle at the intersection of Hopps and Randall roads. The second driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Quezada, of the 200-block of Gifford Street in Elgin, was charged charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license.

He is due in bond court on Monday.
