Police search for shooter who killed boy, 14, in Englewood

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police are searching for the person who shot and killed a 14-year-old boy in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. His mother said she had just moved her family back to the city after trying to escape the violence.

J'Quantae Riles was shot near West 59th Street and South Oakley Avenue while walking home from a barbershop with his friends around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Friends, family and community members gathered for a vigil Sunday night to mourn the 8th grader's death. Candles spelled out his name on the sidewalk where he was gunned down.

Franika Marshall, J'Quantae's mother, is six months pregnant with twins. She told ABC7 Eyewitness News she moved to Virginia to get away from the violence.

"I was so tired of being scared for my baby," Marshall said. "I was so tired of being scared. I tried to leave everything. I left everything. I did."

She had to move her family back to Chicago ten days ago.

Police said the shooting was gang-related and believe Riles may have had gang ties. His family said that is not the case. But Marshall said she believes someone else in the group was targeted.

"Whoever know who these kids is who was shooting at my grandchild, I want them to speak up. I want them caught and go to jail because my grandson didn't do nothing to nobody," said Carolyn Marshall, the victim's grandmother.

No one is in custody.

J'Quantae Riles was the second 14-year-old boy was shot on the South Side in three days. On Thursday, another 14-year-old - an innocent bystander - was critically injured after being shot in the chest outside of Baker College Prep while on the basketball court with other students. After he was shot, the teen ran into the building to try and get help. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

On Friday, three teens were injured in a shooting as classes ended for the day at Excel Southwest High School in the city's Southwest Side. Two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old boy were shot. No arrests have been made in that case.
