An American Airlines flight's wing clipped a United Airlines plane on a taxiway at Chicago O'Hare airport Wednesday morning, the FAA said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- An American Airlines flight's wing clipped the tail of a United Airlines flight Wednesday morning at O'Hare airport, the airlines and Federal Aviation Administration said.

Aviation officials said the wing tip of an American Airlines flight 1979 to Los Angeles hit the tail of United Airlines flight 219 to Honolulu, while the planes were taxiing on different taxiways about 10 a.m.

A different aircraft will take the passengers to Hawaii.

Passengers on the American Airlines flight got off the plane at a gate, and will fly out on a replacement aircraft Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

The American Airlines plane involved has been removed from service for inspection.

"We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused," the spokesperson said.

There was minimal impact to airfield operations, officials said.

The FAA will investigate the cause of the collision.

In 2024, there were 21 "runway incursions" at O'Hare. These are near-misses and situations in which planes (or anyone on the tarmac) are in the wrong place at the wrong time, whether by accident or through some confusion from directions. All were of the lowest two incident categories for safety risk.

The last time there was a category "A" runway incursion at O'Hare (the most serious incidents in which a collision happened or was narrowly missed) was in 2015.
