2 teens found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning inside car in Hoffman Estates: officials

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (WLS) -- Two teenagers were found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning inside a car in the north suburbs early Sunday morning, officials said.

Someone found the 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl, who were unconscious and not breathing inside of a locked car, and called police just after 12:30 a.m.

The teens were found in the 200-block of East Berkley Lane in Hoffman Estates.

Officers said they had to break into the car to pull the two teenagers out. Police would not specify whether the car was inside of the garage or outside.

First responders tried to save the teens but could not.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the 17-year-old boy as Yeferson Flores Ramos and the 16-year-old girl as Litzy Flores.

Police say a preliminary autopsy report shows their causes of death appear to be accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officers and paramedics were back at the home later Sunday afternoon for unrelated reasons.

People who were at the home did not want to speak on Sunday, but neighbors say a multi-generation family has lived in the home for about five years.

"It's shocking, because this neighborhood is very, very quiet. To have something like that happen to such young kids, I can't believe it," said neighbor Debra Patel. "They're so young. I don't understand how you could have carbon monoxide when you're in a car outside, so that's kind of a puzzle to me."

Police would not share the relationship the two teenagers had with each other or with the people who live at the home. The case remains under investigation.
