GURNEE, Ill. (WLS) -- A 33-year-old was fatally struck in north suburban Gurnee Wednesday night, Gurnee police said.
Authorities initially said it was a hit-and-run.
Authorities responded to the scene at about 8:04 p.m. to the 2100-block of North Delany Road.
Police said the woman was crossing in the middle of Delany Street and was not in the crosswalk when she was hit by a truck.
The woman was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. She has been identified to the Lake County Coroner's Office as 33-year-old Amber Knowles.
"The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian had not fled the scene and so it's not a hit and run crash, but instead had pulled off the roadway into a nearby business and realized that they had hit something and went back to the scene to speak to investigators about it," Gurnee Police Detective Shawn Gaylor said.
Police are exploring all other factors that may have contributed to the tragic crash.
"It was rather dark and we believe maybe she was struck because of the low lighting, not using the crosswalk, there might be multiple reasons," Detective Gaylor said.
Delany was closed during the investigation but it has since reopened.
Further details were not immediately available.
