Police found 40-year-old Erika Greene just after 7 p.m. Saturday at 80th Street and South Princeton Avenue. Greene was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mother of three was believed to be on her way home from the Drake Hotel where she worked.
Greene's foster mother says she thinks it was a carjacking attempt.
"You know, you just don't deserve to go like this. She was by herself, and she has been a loner too, you know, but this shouldn't have happened," Lolita Stanford said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Chicago police.
