BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- A western lowland gorilla was born at Brookfield Zoo on September 23, 2015, in Tropic World: Africa.

Mom, Kamba, 11, is caring for her baby, whose sex has not been determined. The baby marks the fourth generation of western lowland gorillas at the zoo.

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, primarily due to illegal pet and bushmeat trade, as well as disease, in the wild. Habitat destruction due to logging is also a problem.
