CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago area winters can be brutal. When temperatures dip down to dangerous levels, it's a good idea to know where you can get warm.

Warming centers open each year for people who do not have access to heat and need a safe place to go.

CHICAGO WARMING CENTERS:

Call 311 or check out this online map to find a warming center near you, especially during off hours and weekday holidays, when the six Department of Family and Support Services warming centers below are not usually open.

In extreme conditions, hours and days may be extended and other city facilities may be designated as temporary warming center.

DFSS officials said the temperature of residential buildings must be at least 68 degrees during the day and at least 66 degrees at overnight. If your landlord is not doing so and the problem cannot be resolved, call 311.

The St. Sabina Church/Catholic Charities Social Service Center, located at 1120 West 79th Street, will operate as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Anyone who does not have a place to stay after 9 p.m. each night will be taken to a shelter.

New Canaan Land Missionary Baptist Church will operate as a warming center from Wednesday to Saturday. The church will have food, movies, pillows, blankets, air beds and a safe, warm place to stay for those who need it.

The Chicago Park District identified 62 park fieldhouses that will be warming centers for the rest of the winter. These fieldhouses will be open during normal Chicago Park District hours, which can be found on each park's website.
