The crash, which occurred around 12:47 p.m., involved a van, a minivan and a pick-up truck. Police say the black minivan to flipped over several times - although its two occupants survived and were conscious after the incident. The three other occupants of the van and pick-up truck were hospitalized in serious-to-critical condition.

Illinois State Police closed all inbound lanes on the expressway for several hours Wednesday afternoon to clear the scene, causing traffic to back up for miles all the way to 130th Street on the Bishop Ford.

"I'm super late, I was supposed to be at work at 4:30!" said Julissa Willard, a commuter.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
