More than 322 lots sold for $1 in Englewood

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago sold more than 322 lots in the Englewood neighborhood under the "Large Lot" program.

The pilot program allows homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit groups to buy city-owned land for just $1 per lot.

City Council is expected to approve on Wednesday the first parcels of land sold.

The mayor's office said the program aims to allow homeowners and community groups to take ownership of vacant city property and improve their neighborhoods. After success in Englewood, the program was expanded to Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The Large Lot program is part of the city's Five-Year Housing Plan, which aims to improve and preserve more than 41,000 units of housing in Chicago. Housing experts, activists, builders and owners helped develop the plan. The city plans to invest $1.3 billion in spending in the housing plan over he next four years.
