Man dragged by SUV, severely injured in Belmont Cragin

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was severely injured after being hit and dragged by a vehicle in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood in June, Chicago police say.

Police say Roman Dzyubinskyy, 20, was injured in the 2000-block of North Leamington around 1 p.m. on June 22. Surveillance video shows him hanging onto the driver's side of a moving SUV.

"In the video you can see they are doing like 40 down the street, dragging him and smashing him repeatedly against the parked cars on the left side," says his wife, who does not wish to be identified.

Witnesses say Dzyubinskyy was out walking his dog at the time of the incident.

"They saw him get called over by somebody in a Nissan Morano and they were having a conversation for about four minutes, and the next thing you know someone in the driver's side grabbed him by the arm," his wife says.

According to his wife he suffered injuries to his spine, head, spinal cord and brain, and is currently comatose.

"We have a baby at home so it is hard to see him in this situation," she says.

Police say they are investigating the incident as aggravated battery. They have not released any details about motive or what may have lead up to the incident.

"I would like to know why. What in their heads was worth someone's life? They could have easily killed him. I don't know what goes through people's heads anymore," she says.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for care, rehabilitation and hospital bills. The page says doctors have told the family he has only a slim hope of full recovery and may never walk again.

Police are unsure if the people and the car and Dzyubinskyy knew each other. The vehicle involved should have some body damage.
