MARKHAM, Ill. (WLS) -- Two major Chicago expressways are now connected, as the interchange between I-57 and I-294 opened Saturday following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Drivers heading north on I-57 now have access to the northbound Tri-State Tollway and vice versa, which will help relieve some traffic congestion in the area.

"It's going to provide a connection between these two important interstates for the first time," said Kristi Lafleur, Illinois Tollway Executive Director. "People are finally going to be able to get from I-57 to I-294 directly, and they're going to have new access at 147th Street, new local access."

The interchange will be totally electronic and will not have cash lanes.

The toll for those with an I-Pass is 75 cents, $1.50 without and those tolls can be paid online.

Drivers are encouraged to get an I-Pass.
