Woman shot in Washington Park, Chicago police say
A woman was shot Saturday night at a park on South Ellsworth Drive in Washington Park, Chicago police said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Teen shot hours after Bud Billiken Parade, Chicago police say

A teen was seriously injured in a shooting Saturday afternoon after the Bud Billiken Parade on the city's South Side.

The shooting happened after an altercation between the victim and a male offender around 2:15 p.m., about two hours after the parade ended, according to Chicago Police Department officials.

The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, initially reported to be in good condition, police said.

Woman shot crash, shooting in Avondale

A woman was shot after a crash in Avondale Friday morning, Chicago police said.

The shooting took place at about 1:46 a.m. in the 3000-block of North California Avenue

Police said a white Dodge Caravan was driving northbound on California Avenue when it collided with a stolen gray Honda and a black Tesla.

Three men got out of the Dodge Caravan and began firing shots in the direction of the gray Honda, police said.

A 19-year-old woman walking on the sidewalk was wounded in the right shoulder and torso, police said. She was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.

2 shot, killed outside West Side apartment building

Two people were shot and killed outside a West Side apartment building Thursday night, Chicago police said.

The shooting occurred at about 9:59 p.m. in the 3400-block of West Douglas Boulevard.

The victims, a man and woman, were both standing in the gangway of an apartment building when shots were fired, police said.

The woman was shot in the head and transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The man was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition with wounds to the head and chest and later died, police said.

Woman, 19, shot in North Park

A 19-year-old woman was critically wounded in a shooting while driving a car in the North Park neighborhood Wednesday night, Chicago police said.

The shooting took place at about 11:35 p.m. in the 3300-block of West Peterson Avenue.

Police said the teen was driving a vehicle with several passengers when shots were fired.

The woman was shot multiple times and transported to Swedish Hospital in critical condition.
