National Teen Driver Safety Week
CHICAGO (WLS) -- October 16-22, 2016 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. It's a time to talk to your children about avoiding dangers behind the wheel. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-olds in the United States.
In 2014, there were 2,679 teen drivers involved in fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes; while an estimated 123,000 teens were injured in crashes. 30% of those crashes were the result of speeding.
Congress established National Teen Driver Safety Week in 2007, intending for this period of time to act as a reminder to all drivers of the dangers of distracted and unsafe driving.
Youth Service America (YSA) is proud to team up with State Farm to announce the 2016 Road Safety Ambassador Program, a year-long program that helps young leaders (ages 16-25) create change around road safety. William Bauman from Grayslake is one of the Road Safety Ambassadors. He joined ABC 7 Eyewitness News to talk about the importance of spreading the message of safe driving.
