CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 13-month-old baby in a stroller was struck and killed Saturday by a car that had allegedly fled the scene of a shooting on the city's South Side, police say.
First responders rushed Dillan Harris to Comer Children's Hospital, but the boy died a short time later.
It was meant to be a fun family outing, but instead, the day ended up in tragedy.
"There were a lot of little kids, a lot of aunties," said crisis responder Andrew Holmes. "They just got together as a family to wait on the bus to enjoy the evening at the beach because the kids wanted to get in the water."
It is unclear whether there was an actual police chase, but investigators say that the vehicle that allegedly struck the child was fleeing the scene of what appears to be a fatal gang-related drive-by shooting three and a half miles away. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which went off the street at 63rd and Ellis around 1:45 p.m. Saturday and onto the curb where Dillan was sitting in his stroller.
Police say a 22-year-old was killed in the shooting.
"One of the women came down with a baby and I grabbed the baby for her and told her, 'Do what you have to do,'" said witness Erin Fletcher. "By the time we made it to the corner, they were pulling the stroller off the baby and the baby was just in fetal position with his butt up in the air. It looked like he was asleep. It was sad. The mother was in the middle of the street just devastated."
Even after hitting Dillan's stroller, police say the car continued driving across an empty lot, where it finally stopped. Dillan's mother and their large extended family all stood at the bus stop, witnessing in horror as residents tried to help.
"The boys jumped out of the car right here in the alley and ran down the street and like I said, the two who were here, you could tell they didn't know where to go," Fletcher said.
Police confirm that they are talking to two suspects, but no charges have been filed in connection to either the fatal shooting or to the accident that claimed Dillan's life.
