4 in custody after police chase starting in Coal City ends at McCormick Place

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Four people are in custody after a police chase that started in Coal City, Ill. ended in Chicago at McCormick Place Tuesday morning, Illinois State Police said.

At around 1:30 a.m., a Coal City police officer spotted the car which had been stolen from Naperville five days ago.

"The officer observed the car, just in the middle of the roadway," said Coal City Sergeant Thomas Logan. "It was just sitting there with the lights on. Then he observed somebody in an adjacent lot running over to the passenger's side of the car, getting in there and then the car went northbound from there."

Then the Chrysler broke a few traffic laws and when it wouldn't pull over for officers, it tried to ram a patrol car. That's when a high speed chase began.

"The speeds did exceed on Route 113 to about 90 mph, where our officers saw that was not safe and they slowed down and they just basically followed from a safe distance at that time," Sergeant Logan said.

When the car left Coal City, other police agencies got involved. Channahon police threw out stop sticks, which flattened some of the car's tires, but that didn't stop them.

The suspects kept going up I-55, traveling about 43 miles to Chicago. Once the car got to 18th Street and Lake Shore Drive, the four suspects bailed out of the Chrysler in the McCormick Place parking lot, but they were taken into custody by police.

Police said one 19-year-old man, twin 16-year-old brothers and a 17-year-old, all from the Englewood neighborhood, are in custody.

Police said there were no injuries and no crashes in the pursuit. They believe the suspects were using the stolen car to steal cash and valuables out of other cars.
