CHICAGO (WLS) -- Democrat Kim Foxx won the Cook County State's Attorney race overwhelmingly against her opponent, Republican Christopher Pfannkuche.

Foxx took 71.6 percent of votes, compared to only 28.4 percent for Pfannkuche.

"Our work is just beginning, this election night is the start of a journey to fixing a system that we know needs repair," Foxx said.

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez lost her bid for reelection following widespread criticism over how she handled the Laquan McDonald police shooting. Foxx beat her out in the primary.

Foxx and her supporters were gathered at Moe's Cantina in Chicago's River North neighborhood to watch election results.
