There, deputies found a 13-year-old suffering from broken bones and other severe injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the teen was operating a motorized minibike, heading southbound on Cayuga Street, the sheriff's office said. The child failed to yield at Elgin Avenue and struck the front passenger side of an SUV, which was heading westbound on Elgin.

The SUV's driver was not injured. The East Joliet Fire Protection District transported the teen to a local hospital.

"Sheriff Mike Kelley reminds parents and guardians that allowing children to operate motorized vehicles such as minibikes or e-scooters on public roadways is both illegal and extremely dangerous," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Further information was not immediately available.
