CHICAGO (WLS) -- In two weeks, the Chicago Public Library will open its newest branch.
The new library, which has some special features, is located on the Obama Presidential Center campus. On Tuesday, ABC7 got a peek inside and saw what is unique about this branch.
The Obama branch of the Chicago Public Library will open to public as the Obama Presidential Center opens on June 19. It is a first for a presidential center in the United States.
"It's a one-of-a-kind endeavor," said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown.
Brown said this branch will operate as most branches do, with 13,000 volumes available to borrow, a special collection for young people, a recording studio, and a maker space.
There is artwork created especially for this branch, including a mural celebrating community and storytelling by Aliza Nisenbaum.
Nekisha Durrett reimagines Harriet Tubman's shawl in a 20-foot piece made of tiles, and the space also has what was one of last pieces made by late Chicagoan Richard Hunt, called Book Bird.
"I can imagine so many in our city coming here to just enhance their quality of life, and how incredible is that going to be alongside international visitors that are going to come from around the world," Brown said.
The branch also has a Presidential Reading Room with 3,000 books personally chosen by the Obamas and a few from the former president's personal collection.
"With messages from Pope Francis and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, so it's a unique space," Brown said.
Brown says being located at the center also allows them to do more events and activities using spaces on the campus.
"We know libraries can change lives. That's what's at stake, so everybody coming through our doors is incredibly important, and being part of this project has just made me think about that more," Brown said.
Chicagoans can get their Chicago Public Library card from the center's branch. But for those visiting and tourists, they will be able to scan a QR code to access some of the branch's collection and some of the Obama's selections.
