Community mourns high school student who died after falling from abandoned building

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) -- A southwest suburban high school student, who fell to his death at a rock quarry has been identified.

Police said the boy fell from an abandoned industrial building around 1 a.m. in the area of Louise Ray Parkway east of Collins Street.

The family of the high school student said they're heartbroken, after the tragic and unexpected loss of 16-year-old Anthony Reed Jr.

Police said the boy and four others climbed into an abandoned building to explore the property, when Reed fell 100 feet, and died at the scene.

Fundraiser organizers have raised nearly $19,000 so far for the family, to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, as they lay the teen to rest.

Reed was a sophomore at Lincoln-Way West High School.

This marks the third child from Manhattan to suddenly pass within the last year.

Last October, two junior high school students in Manhattan passed away just days apart.

11-year-old Danny Bayles died after suffering a medical emergency.

13-year-old Chance Hunnicutt was killed after he was hit by a semi while biking with his twin brother and friends.

School counselors from across the Lincoln-Way district have been present this week to support struggling staff and students.

Manhattan Mayor Mike Adrieansen said in a statement:

"Our community is once again facing the heartbreaking loss of a child, and there are simply no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel. My heart goes out to the Reed family and everyone who knew and loved their child.

In times like this, Manhattan must come together as a community, supporting one another, lifting the family up in prayer, and reminding them that they are not alone. We grieve with them, and we will stand with them."
