Appellate court rules CPD discipline cases should remain public

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Disciplinary hearings for Chicago police officers should take place in public, according to a ruling Friday by a panel of Illinois appellate court judges.

The appellate court upheld a previous court ruling that mandated public access to the most serious cases involving alleged misconduct by Chicago Police Department officers.

The panel found closed-door hearings would violate public policy on police accountability and transparency.

ABC7 has reached out to the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police for comment.
