"This is devastating loss for our department and for our city. Our officers put on their uniform every day and today to serve the community and protect this community, and Brian made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. During the incident, a second officer was also shot. He is in stable condition and is expected to survive. My heart is heavy. I'm asking that we lean on one another to get through this," Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice said.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson, was apprehended by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT.
Indiana State Police and other agencies were actively searching for the suspect for hours after the shooting.
ISP said the suspect was taken into custody without incident after a concerned citizen tipped off officers. Officers say he was the only suspect involved in the incident.
