Calumet City police officers fire shots while responding to shootout

CALUMET CITY, Ill. (WLS) -- Calumet City police officers fired shots in response to a shootout in the suburb Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded at about 7 p.m. to the 400-block of Buffalo Avenue after a report of a large group of male suspects fighting.

Police said there was active gunfire from multiple suspects when officers arrived.

Officers located an suspect armed with a gun in an alley and after officers demanded he drop the gun, police said he turned toward officers. Officers fired their weapons, but no one was struck and the officers were not injured.

Two suspects fled the scene and one was taken into custody a short time later, police said. Two guns were recovered on the scene.
