3 critically hurt, including 8-year-old in house fire in Portage Park, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least three people, including an 8-year-old boy, were hurt in a house fire in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood on Monday, according to the Chicago Fire Department and police.

The fire started in the basement at about 6:10 a.m. on North Austin Avenue and Irving Park Road, firefighters said.

When firefighters arrived, four people were able to escape the fire. Three of them were taken to area hospitals, including two minors.

Chicago police said an 8-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man were taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition.

CPD said all three victim had burns and suffered injuries from smoke inhalation.

A cat was found in the home; CFD said firefighters gave the cat oxygen and rescued it.

One person declined to be transported, according to the fire department.

CTA said #91 Austin buses were temporarily rerouted in both directions via Austin, Montrose, Narragansett, Irving Park, Austin, and over regular route.

CPD said a total of eight people were displaced in the fire.
