2 renovated American Airlines gates reopen at O'Hare airport in $300-million project

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two gates reopened at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Thursday.

Gates K1 and L2A reopened with four baggage claims, signaling the revamp of Terminal 3 is almost complete.

The $300-million project dubbed ElevateT3 is part of Chicago's vision to transform one of the busiest airports.

The project includes an expanded passenger corridor between Concourse K and Concourse L, upgrades to the baggage claim area, approximately 10,000 square feet of new space for concessions and amenities, and an updated American Airlines Admirals Club.

The project is being paid for by previously allocated federal funds, and airline charges.

"American's investment sends a clear message: Chicago is truly a market worth betting on," Mayor Brandon Johnson said. "O'Hare is a hub worth building for and our future is certainly strong."

"Each milestone brings us closer to a Terminal 3 that's brighter, easier to navigate and better equipped to serve passengers," Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Michael McMurray.

Terminal 3 will remain open during construction.

With the project expected to be completed by next summer.
