The Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigated the March 2024 shooting.

It happened during a traffic stop in East Garfield Park.

Last August, Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke announced the officers would not face criminal charges.

Andrew M. Stroth, attorney for the Reed family, said "The family of Dexter Reed is disappointed by this decision by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and would like to see the full investigative report."

COPA officials said 96 gunshots were fired in 41 seconds by four Chicago police officers, all members of a CPD tactical team, at Reed during a traffic stop near Humboldt Park and Garfield Park. The medical examiner said Reed was shot 13 times and later died at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
