1 of 2 custodians killed in apparent murder-suicide in Garfield Ridge school ID'd: officials

CHICAGO (WLS) -- One of the two people found shot to death in a Southwest Side school earlier this week has been identified.

Theottis James Stigger, 63, of Chicago died by suicide, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The other person killed was a homicide victim, the medical examiner's office previously said.

Chicago police and union officials said two school custodians were found shot to death inside Mark Twain Elementary School on Monday afternoon.

The school's principal said no students were inside the building at the time of the shooting, but the incident left some families questioning school safety ahead of the start of the school year.

Police said they received a call at about 3:40 p.m. from the Garfield Ridge neighborhood's 5100-block of South Lotus. A 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man were found inside the school, each with a single gunshot wound to the head, police said. Both were taken to a hospital, where they died.

Audio from police radio communications included reports that "In the hallway we have one female," "The shooter shot himself in the head," and "There is a firearm right next to the offender."

Police have not said what led to the gunfire.
