The shooting happened at about 5:24 a.m. in the 600-block of South Paulina Street, Chicago police said.

A 23-year-old woman was parked outside when a dark-colored sedan approached, police said.

Chicago police said the suspects got out of the car and started shooting.

The woman's father said she works as a dispatcher at Rush. She was getting ready to start her shift when she was shot.

The woman was shot multiple times throughout the body. She was taken to Stroger hospital in critical condition, police said.

Her family said it was a targeted attack.

The woman's father said she is out of surgery, stable, awake and talking.

She is recovering at Stroger after being shot seven times, he said.

"They know her schedule. And plus, we heard the car had no plates, no plates on the car. So, they know what time she was getting. Now, what that's going to work in that it happened right in front of the hospital. And that's messed up because if you ain't safe in front of hospital, where you safe at?" said her father, who did not want to be identified. "I'm worried about this happen again. Because, you know, at five, 5:24 in the morning, that's, you know, that's pitiful."

The investigation unfolded as medical students made their way to class.

"Definitely scary, I never felt unsafe here before," nursing student Kyra Laird said. "Definitely makes you think how delicate life is for sure."

A spokesperson for Rush said in a statement: "Rush Security is coordinating with the Chicago Police Department after an employee was the victim of an aggravated battery with a firearm outside the Armour Academic Center.

The victim and their family are at the center of our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Wellness resources are being made available to any staff in need following this incident.

The Rush community is deeply appreciative of the response from our security team and first responders.

Additional questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Chicago Police Department."

Nobody is in custody. CPD is investigating.

Chicago Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. said in a statement:

"First and foremost, my prayers are with the victim and their loved ones at this time. I'm heartened she's alive and receiving care; however, her condition remains critical, and I pray for her full recovery.

"This was a deeply disturbing act of violence in our community. I have full confidence in the Chicago Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation, and it's important that we allow them the time and space to do their job. At this point, we are waiting for investigators to share more information about the motive. Our focus right now must be on supporting the victim and ensuring the safety of everyone in the Illinois Medical District and the 27th Ward."
