CPD shuts down Lincoln Park bar after deadly shooting, alderman says; video shows altercation

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Dime bar in Lincoln Park has been shut down after a man was shot to death, 43rd Ward Alderman Timmy Knudsen said.

The deadly shooting happened Sunday at about 11:43 p.m. in the 2200-block of North Lincoln Avenue, according to police.

Malik McCorkle, 30, was shot in the head and died at Illinois Masonic Hospital, officials said.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out near a bar and someone fired shots at McCorkle.

Security camera video from a nearby business shows a large crowd gathered in the street, with several people holding guns before the shooting. More than a dozen shots were fired, according to authorities.

A suspect was taken into custody and charges are pending, police said.

On Tuesday, Knudsen announced that Chicago police ordered The Dime bar to close immediately under a summary closure order.

"I am grateful to Superintendent Waller for understanding the ongoing public safety threat of this bar, and taking the rare step of a Summary Closure Order," Knudsen said.

The order allows police to shut down a business without a hearing if its determined to be a "public safety threat."

"I'm not gonna stand for an establishment link to so many guns in our community," Knudsen said.

The closure lasts up to six months.

Knudsen said there have been multiple other shooting incidents connected to the bar, including one about a month and a half ago in which a 39-year-old woman was critically injured.

Neighbors gathered outside the bar after the notice was posted.

Several longtime business owners in the neighborhood said they support the closure.

John McMahon, owner of Bacino's Pizza, which has operated nearby for more than four decades, said his nighttime business has disappeared in recent years.

"I think it's because of the activity down the block. People don't feel comfortable with things happening down the block," McMahon said.

Some business owners also said there is less police presence in the area than there was previously.

Other residents, however, cautioned against placing all responsibility on a single establishment.

"There's a lot of bars at this street so definitely more people out here. More people can lead to anything. I don't think it's any different than any other neighborhood," neighbor Nate Maldonado said.

The family of McCorkle said they were not ready to speak publicly or share a photograph of him. The investigation remains ongoing.

In an exclusive statement to ABC7, The Dime owners said:

The facts surrounding this incident are the subject of an active law enforcement investigation, and we are fully cooperating with the Chicago Police Department and all appropriate city agencies."

"The Dime has consistently taken the safety of its patrons, employees, and neighbors seriously and remains committed to operating responsibly and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations."

"As the investigation continues, we respectfully ask that conclusions not be drawn before all of the facts are known. We are confident the evidence will accurately establish the circumstances of this incident and the respective responsibilities of those involved."

"Out of respect for the victim's family and the ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment at this time."
