Downers Grove to continue Pride Month plans despite community debate

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- A community debate happened over Pride Month in Downers Grove and whether it should continue.

People went into Tuesday night's council meeting to voice their opinions on the issue.

"Recognizing LGBTQ people does not erase veterans, families, religious communities, children, or any other group deserving of care and respect," Jodi Harap said during public comment. "Inclusion is not a pay with only so many slices."

"Homosexuality is a personal matter, personal life-style choices are not typically the subject of official village-wide celebrations," said Eileen Bryner during public comment. "No other sexual orientation receives this level of government recognition."

Mayor Bob Barnett said despite the opposition, he will be proclaiming June as Pride Month at the village council meeting on June 2.

The annual DG Pride Fest will go on as planned on June 6.
