Gary couple charged after multiple children found living in deplorable conditions, documents show

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A Northwest Indiana couple is facing charges after multiple children were found living in deplorable conditions, court documents showed.

Matthew Morgan and Maglene Kilgore have been charged with multiple counts of child neglect, officials said.

A child abuse report was made after officers responded to a home in the 1200 block of West 17th Avenue in Gary on July 20.

Investigators observed "cockroaches on the walls, floor, furniture, and in clothing..." and "feces smeared on the floor throughout the residence," according to court documents.

Four juvenile victims were found at the home, and there was also a fifth victim who told officers they often took care of the other children. The victims all lived in the home with Morgan and Kilgore, according to records from the Department of Child Services.

The five victims are Kilgore's children and Morgan is her fiancé, the documents showed.
