Officers speak after jumping into frozen pond to rescue crash victims

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- Dramatic video shows suburban officers jump into a frozen pond to rescue three crash victims.

ABC7 heard from the heroic officers, who described the harrowing moments.

The crash happened on Sunday at about 1:35 a.m. in the area of Burdette Avenue and Roberta Avenue, Glendale Heights police said.

Police said a driver crashed into a frozen pond; when police arrived, the victims were about 30 feet from the shoreline. The vehicle was submerged 12 feet underwater.

The air temperature was 1 degree at the time.

Responding Officers Dennis Stachura and Marco Lomibao immediately jumped into the water to help rescue the victims.

The dramatic video shows as the officers work to try to keep the victims calm: "we got you."

All three victims were treated for minor injuries, police said. The officers were also uninjured.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was charged with Driving Under the Influence.
