14-year-old killed in hit-and-run crash; Homewood police say driver in custody

HOMEWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A 14-year-old boy died on Sunday in a south suburban hit-and-run crash, police said.

The crash happened at about 8:17 p.m. at the intersection of 183rd Street and Governors Highway, Homewood police said.

The driver of a grey Chevy Equinox was heading south on Governors Highway when he veered off the roadway and struck a black Buick Park Avenue and a black Nissan Rogue.

Police said the victim vehicles were stopped and facing west on 183rd Street.

The 36-year-old driver of the Chevy fled on foot but was taken into custody by police.

A 14-year-old passenger of the Nissan Rogue died in the crash, police said.

He was identified as Kyran Smith.

A 27-year-old was driving the Nissan; they were taken to an area hospital and are expected to be OK.

The 31-year-old driver and 33-year-old passenger of the Buick Park Avenue were treated for minor injuries.

Homewood police are investigating the crash. No other information was released.

It was unclear what charges the driver of the Chevy could face.
