House committee investigating legality of CPS policies supporting transgender students

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A U.S. House committee is reviewing whether Chicago Public Schools violated federal law with policies supporting transgender students.
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce is demanding CPS turn over a list of documents.

Those include complaints from parents and coaches about policies that support transgender students.
The committee is giving CPS until Sept. 11 to comply. ABC7 reached out to CPS, but the district is not commenting.
ABC7 has also learned that CPS has won back millions of dollars in federal funding after a separate federal review specific to magnet schools.
The U.S. Department of Education took back millions meant for those magnet schools. It argued district policies supporting Black and transgender students violated federal law.
CPS sued the government in March, and now, after a settlement, it will be getting the money back.
