IL state police ask for help finding vehicle involved in deadly crash

ELWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- Illinois State Police are asking for the public's help in finding a vehicle involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash in the south suburbs last week.

State police said the crash took place between 6 and 6:30 p.m. last Monday on southbound Route 53 at Tehle Road in Elwood.

Troopers found a male bicyclist on the ground in the area just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died, police said.

The vehicle involved is possibly a black 2007-2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, police said.

The truck's front headlight and part of the bumper were found at the scene.

The victim's mother identified him as 25-year-old De'Avion Smith.

She said he was heading to work when he was killed.

Anyone driving in the area at the time of the crash, anyone who witnessed the crash or anyone who may have dash camera video of the incident or video of the location near the time of the crash is asked to call ISP special agents at 815-221-2709 or submit a tip on ISP's Crime Tip website.

There is a fundraiser Tuesday night in Smith's honor, at Second Baptist Church Joliet.
